Governors are responsible for the strategic direction of the school and do not get involved in its day to day management. Governor board meetings are key to fulfilling the board’s responsibilities,
But meetings around a table late into the night do not, on their own, allow governors to see how their strategy is working in practice. And whilst challenging questions can be raised during meetings, it is vital that there are opportunities to see the evidence on the ground.
So regular visits to school, to meet with phase and subject leaders, take place on a termly basis. During visits governors will review action plans, look at children’s books and displays and talk to staff. Most importantly, they talk to the children to understand how their decisions are affecting them.
Once a year all governors spend a day in school which gives them a great opportunity to really know and understand what a day in the life of Upland looks and feels like for the children.
