Mock Tudor Band
Upland Schools’ Year 4 classes, Mars and Venus, invited the Mock Tudor band and dancers to visit them in school to bring their Tudor topic to life.
The musicians brought families of recorders and crumhorns as well as a bass viol and early violins and a wide repertoire of pieces from the time of Henry VIII and other Tudor monarchs. These included dances and songs from different levels of Tudor society and even one, The Fairy Round, that is floating around space on the space ship Voyager!
The dancers taught a dance to each class, a stately Pavane to the song of Pastime with good company as well as the Gangnam style piece of its day called Horses Brawl! The children loved performing one of the dances to Thistle class (Year 2) who popped in for a quick look.
The children learnt about the clothes that rich and poor Tudors would have worn as the dancers talked about their own costumes and then added layers of clothes to a dummy until she was dressed up as a lady of the time.
Earlier in the week the children prepared three songs and had great fun singing along with the band to the tunes of Greensleeves, Pastime and Tomorrow the fox.
To end the children got a chance to ask some questions about the instruments.
The band and dancers were full of praise at how well the children listened to their music and instructions and the intelligent questions that they asked.
