Our Children

The driving force behind what we deliver.

Through recognition of the need to prepare our children for their futures, and through the identification of their starting points, we have developed our package in a way which enables children to step into their stretch zone. The wide and varied opportunities we offer our children allow them to do this in many different forms.

Typically when joining Upland, our children have an awareness of risk. We recognise that they have to potential to be aware of their personal safety and wellbeing:

Our children will achieve this by:

  •  Making decisions which will keep them safe and healthy.
  • Being responsible for making safe decisions around the building.
  • Respecting the ‘rule of law’ and the protection it offers for their wellbeing and safety.

Typically when joining Upland, our children are adaptable to new faces, environments and routines. We recognise that they have to potential to be resilient and determined.

Our children will achieve this by:

  • Taking an active role in their learning through encouragement and support from staff, peers, and parents and carers.
  • Improving their performance and being willing to learn from areas for development as well as strengths.
  • Enjoying lessons and relishing the challenges of the tasks set.

Typically when joining Upland, our children have had some opportunities to be expressive. We recognise that they have to potential to be creative:

Our children will achieve this by:

  • Having the opportunities to express creative one-off thoughts, “Thinking outside of the box”.
  • Have access to quality first provision for the arts.
  • Transfer skills between subjects.

Typically when joining Upland, our children are enthusiastic. We recognise that they have to potential to be independent and confident:

Our children will achieve this by:

  • Developing the confidence to ask questions.
  • Developing over time the ability to work autonomously and to take responsibility for their own learning, increasingly taking initiative.
  • Concentrating on tasks set and listening attentively when appropriate.
  • Developing self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise.

Typically when joining Upland, our children have started to develop an awareness of social interaction. We recognise that they have to potential to be collaborative.

Our children will achieve this by:

  •  Helping each other and working collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Taking on a range of roles within a group.
  • Coaching and learning from each other.
  • Respecting and learning from each other.
  • Respecting democracy and the democratic process.

Typically when joining Upland, our children valued. We recognise that they have to potential to be proud.

Our children will achieve this by:

  • Evaluating their achievements.
  • Celebrating and sharing their achievements and those of other’s.
  • Taking care in their presentation.
  • Contributing to the wider success of the school.

Typically when joining Upland, our children have some exposure to the wider world. We recognise that they have to potential to widen their diversity to be responsible:

Our children will achieve this by:

  • Engaging in their learning and moving it forward.
  • Managing their behaviour in and around the school – representing the school at all times.
  • Taking ownership of resources and the school grounds.
  • Distinguishing between right and wrong and respecting the civil and criminal law in England.
  • Accepting responsibility for their behaviour, showing initiative, and understanding how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely.
  • Accepting about others’ beliefs, religious or otherwise.
