In response to numerous questions and feedback from a number of parents regarding homework expectations, we are currently reviewing our Homework Policy, clarifying expectations from school, children and parents.

We recognise the value of younger children sharing their learning in the home situation with reinforcement activities. It is helpful for junior children to adopt a positive attitude towards homework and to develop a sensible routine which involves pacing themselves so that they do not leave everything last minute. We rely greatly on parental support and guidance to encourage pupils to be self-disciplined and to complete tasks on time. Work should also be presented to a standard similar to that which is expected at school. However, work set should not be entirely dependent on adult help because of differing home circumstances and work/leisure commitments.

Children’s educational development is not purely limited to the school environment. Consequently, a child’s learning involves a partnership between the pupil, teacher and the parent. It is therefore crucial to work together in reinforcing a ‘positive learning climate’ where children are provided with the maximum support to encourage a good attitude towards homework routine.

Whilst homework is valuable for the reasons given above, it is important that it does not cause unnecessary pressure on children who are at a crucial stage of their personal and social development. We recognise the importance of social interaction particularly with primary aged children and therefore we actively encourage their participation in extracurricular activities and other organisations.

Consequently, the homework programme needs to be regular to establish a routine but also flexible enough to allow for other commitments.

Homework can take a range of forms:

  • Weekly basic rehearsal and consolidation of spellings, number bonds, times tables, children’s individual targets etc. This also includes daily reading at home which is recorded in the children’s reading record books. Expectations for homework set regularly will always be appropriate to age and ability. Full details will be communicated each term in your child’s year group curriculum letter to parents.
  • An extended piece of homework linked to the current topic, e.g. model making, book making, power point presentation etc.
  • Individualised homework set as and when an individual requires it.
  • Pupils with Special Educational Needs may be set additional work to reinforce or support Individual Educational Plans. However, this will be in consultation with the class teacher and parents, so that these pupils do not become overburdened and discouraged.


At Upland our aims are to:

  • Provide opportunities for curriculum reinforcement and extension activities.
  • Develop study skills and independent working.
  • Encourage pupils to share their schoolwork with adults at home who can then have a greater role in supporting their child’s learning.
  • Help pupils develop their personal organisation skills.
  • Encourage pupils to work towards time targets.
  • Prepare Key stage 2 pupils for a smooth transition towards their secondary school education by becoming familiar with a regular homework routine.


Our Strategies to achieve these aims:

  • Children are encouraged to bring their homework book into school daily as the class teacher may set personalised homework in responses to a child’s progress within a particular lesson.
  • Children are given a reading record book in varying forms across the school; this is for parents to sign and comment when they hear their child read. It is also a way of communication between home and school.
  • Homework will usually be set in advance with a few days’ notice to enable pupils to plan around other social/domestic arrangements.


This year all children will be issued with a homework book (this should be brought to school each day). Here are the Homework guidelines for each phase of the school.

Foundation Stage (Reception)   Homework will consist of:

A reading book to read each night.

Daily phonics homework.

Weekly activity involving either an English or Maths activity.

Class characters will be sent home over the course of the year, the children will be required to complete a homework diary.

Key stage 1 (Yr. 1& 2) Homework will consist of: time expectation 1 hr. per week:

Daily reading 5 minutes minimum per evening.

Weekly spellings in Year 2 and Tricky word recognition in Year 1.

A weekly piece of homework to be completed in a Homework Book. This may be an investigation, project or writing task relating to English, Maths or Topic work.

In the Summer Term Year 2 children will receive weekly times tables to learn.

Homework in Years 1 & 2 will be given out on a Monday and is expected back into school by Thursday each week.


 Lower Key stage 2 (Yr. 3 & 4) Homework will consist of: time expectation 90 mins per week:

Daily reading 10 mins per evening.

Spelling and timetables table practice of which will be tested on alternate weeks.

A weekly English or Maths task to be completed in Homework book.

A Termly Project will be set for all children to work on and research.

All Homework in years 3 &4 will be given out on a Friday and expected back in school by Wednesday.


 Upper Key stage 2 (Yr. 5 & 6) Homework will consist of: time expectation a minimum of 2 hrs. per week.

Daily reading at least 10 minutes per evening.

Weekly spellings given out on a Friday and tested the following Friday.

Weekly maths facts/times tables given out on a Friday and tested the following Friday.

A Weekly Maths based activity given out on a Friday, expected back by the following Wednesday.

A weekly English based activity given out on a Friday, expected back by the following Wednesday.

An extended piece of creative/research/cross curricular homework for each half term holiday.
