At Upland school we believe that academic success is crucially important for our pupils. We also believe that this, on its own, is not enough and that we owe it to our pupils to provide opportunities for them to develop what are sometimes called ‘soft skills.’ Independence, confidence, determination, resilience, team working and many more besides.
We aim to achieve this through an ambitious outdoor learning program that begins in the outside area and the forest school of our foundation stage, develops into the annual outdoor week and culminates with 2 Outward Bound adventures in year 5 and year 6. The year 6 trip is the opportunity for children to show off the skills they have developed over their time at Upland and participate in an overnight or long day expedition and cook out as well as earning a John Muir award so that when they leave us they leave with the package of academic results they deserve, as well as the skills and attributes to apply these successfully in the next part of their education and beyond.
